The City of Poughkeepsie has scheduled a second public meeting to talk about its plans to make major upgrades to Liberty Street Parking Lot.

The $1.4 million, the environmentally friendly project will vastly improve the pavement and drainage of the public parking lot and reduce the impacts of flooding during strong weather events.

Outdated stormwater management methods will be replaced by “green Infrastructure,” including concentrate pavers that will enable water to soak into ground sources reducing runoff and flooding.

The city will continue the discussion about this project at a meeting in the Common Council Chambers at 5 p.m. Thursday, January 16.

The City held its first public meeting across from the parking lot in the lobby at 40 Cannon St. on Dec. 17. Dozens of people attended that meeting. The city is accepting public comment on the plan until Friday, Jan. 17. You can email your comments or questions to mayor@cityofpoughkeepsie.com.

The Liberty lot project is expected to begin in the spring and also will help combat the impacts of water runoff that can overwhelm the city’s sewer system. Permeable pavers also can reduce the need for deicing chemicals while providing a durable and aesthetically-pleasing surface.

The 153-space parking lot will be renovated in two phases, leaving half of the spots available for use throughout the project.
