New Poughkeepsie Brewery Previews Beer Lineup Ahead of Opening

Poughkeepsie's newest brewery will be open to the public in January, but we're already getting a sneak preview of their beers.

Zeus Brewing Company is set to open in the new Queen City lofts building on Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Finishing touches are being put on the spacious new taproom that will officially start pouring beer for customers on January 6.

Head Brewer, Amit Ram, has been hard at work on the initial lineup of beers that will be available for the opening. Ram says that his focus is on offering fresh, well-balanced beer. And since Zeus Brewing Company is a brewpub, the beers need to pair well with food.

We were lucky enough to sample four of Zeus' new beers. The first was a New England IPA. The Zeus NEIPA has that juicy hops flavor that everyone looks for in a hazy IPA, but doesn't go overboard with sweetness. This soon-to-be crowdpleaser has just the right bite of bitterness and really exemplifies the brewery's mission to present well-balanced beers.

Ram then had us taste the brewery's lager. The concept of this beer is to reimagine one of the oldest styles of beer for modern drinkers. This American version of a traditional lager has much more flavor than its ancestors, with a crisp hop bite that quickly dissolves into the sweetness of the malt. Those who skip right over a lager on the menu may want to give this one a try. It may actually make you fall in love with lagers all over again.

We also sampled the brewery's Pale Ale and Pilsener, both of them, again, great examples of what these styles are supposed to be. Ram says he's also working on a Stout to round out the opening beer menu. After that, you can expect to find not only a solid lineup of traditional styles, but also the occasional experiment. Ram says he wants to leave room to invent his own styles of beer and, perhaps, even start the next new beer trend.

Beer fans will need to wait until January 6 to check out all of these beers when Zeus Brewing Company officially opens their doors on Main Street in Poughkeepsie. This winter, the brewpub will be open with a full menu of food and beer. And then, in the spring, the brewery will unveil their rooftop bar with sweeping views of the Hudson River.
