Mystery Illness Cuts School Trip Short for Hudson Valley Students

An overnight trip to Washington D.C. has been shortened after Hudson Valley school children reportedly began to feel ill.

A letter from the Wappingers Central School District was sent to parents on Thursday, alerting them to an issue that arose during the end-of-year class trip. While visiting the nation's capital several students became ill with what the school characterizes as "stomach problems:" On Thursday morning more students fell ill, causing the school to make a decision to cut the trip short.

Originally, the students from Van Wyck Junior High were supposed to visit Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. That part of the itinerary was scrapped and the decision was made to return to the East Fishkill school ahead of schedule and get all of the sick children home as soon as possible.

In the letter, Principal Steven Shuchat said: "it remains unclear what caused the students to become sick." The bus was scheduled to arrive back at the school by 3pm on Thursday. The school says that the decision to return early "was made in the "best interest" of (the) children."
