MLK Celebrations in Poughkeepsie

The City of Poughkeepsie Mayor, Rob Rolison has issued a statement regarding the MLK celebrations taking place in the city.

Mayor Rolison stated the following:

On Monday, the nation pauses to remember one of the greatest civil rights leaders in our history Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated in April 1968. By the time of his death, King had accomplished so much, but, instead of resting on those accomplishments, he was in Memphis speaking on behalf of striking sanitation workers. His story is a remarkable one of self-sacrifice. Each year, the national MLK observance is the third Monday of January, close to King’s birthday, Jan. 15. In the diverse City of Poughkeepsie, that observance is appropriately extended. On Sunday night, Jan. 19, Beulah Baptist Church will hold a special service to honor Dr. King. and, on Friday morning, Jan. 24, the Catharine Street Community Center is set for its annual MLK breakfast featuring speakers and music. As a community, hundreds of people will gather at tables spread across the floor of the Mid-Hudson Civic Center. It is always such a splendid sight. As your mayor, I look forward to representing the city at these celebrations that honor Dr. King and his legacy.

The mayor will be among the speakers at the Martin Luther King Commemorative Services at Beulah Baptist Church, 92 Catharine Street, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, and at the MLK Catharine Street Community Center breakfast at 7:15 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center, 14 Civic Center Plaza.
