With kids off from schools, many are losing their main source of food.

Some of the most vulnerable children in our area depend on school food programs to get the nourishment they need. When not in school, many kids may have a hard time figuring out where their next meal will be coming from.

Some dedicated Poughkeepsie veterans are now springing into action to provide those children with healthy lunches. VFW Post 170 in Poughkeepsie is partnering with other local nonprofits like Hudson River Housing and Hope On A Mission to get those meals to the kids who really need them.

The VFW is asking for your help. The Poughkeepsie chapter is accepting lunch food items as well as donations to purchase ingredients. Food items must be new and sealed. Items being requested are jars of peanut butter and jelly, loaves of white bread, individually wrapped chips, cookies, crackers and snacks, juice boxes, paper lunch bags, plastic sandwich bags.

Donations can be dropped off at the VFW Post 170 at 1 Violet Avenue in Poughkeepsie from noon to 8pm every day. For more information, you can give them a call at (845) 452-5407.

These are truly Vets Who Rock! Every month we’re honoring one military person as the Vet Who Rocks with $500 and entering them into the drawing for $10,000 to be awarded the week of Veteran’s Day. If you'd like to nominate a Vet Who Rocks, follow this link.
