The Most Congested Stretch of Route 9 Is Getting Even Worse
Dealing with traffic is something everyone in the Hudson Valley, has to deal with. But one stretch of Route 9 seems to be getting out of control.
If you've traveled south on Route 9 recently, there's a good chance that you've sat in traffic in Wappingers Falls. For some reason, the three lights that intersect Route 9 with New Hackensack Rd, East Main Street and the Home Depot parking lot have become painfully out of sync.
It's unclear why this spot is so congested, but it seems to be much worse heading south. This weekend I was sitting in traffic that would not move, even after the light turned green at Middlebush Rd. Cars were already backed up from the East Main Street light that was still red, so nothing was moving. And after patiently waiting through a few cycles of green lights, my reward was another red light at the Home Depot.
For those who were hoping for some relief from this ridiculously congested stretch of Route 9, I've got some bad news for you: it looks like this area is only going to get busier.
A new Starbucks is set to open soon right at the light that already serves the Home Depot and McDonald's. With increased traffic flowing in and out of that intersection, especially during rush hours, there's no telling how bad the traffic is going to get.
It's unclear why the traffic has gotten so bad in this area. The fact that cars don't move when the light turns green is a sign that there could be a problem with the timing of the lights. Of course, no matter how well the signals are synced up, if there are too many cars on the road, there's not much that can be done.
Other areas of Route 9, however, don't seem to be nearly as bad as this small stretch in the Village of Wappingers. Let's hope someone figures something soon otherwise, we're just going to have to wait for those flying cars the Jetsons promised us we were getting years ago.
