Poughkeepsie Sears Store Officially Closing; Liquidation Underway
Another Sears location is shutting its doors in the Hudson Valley.
On Tuesday employees of the Sears in Poughkeepsie found out that the store would be closing down. After months of speculation, the news was made official and workers are now assisting with liquidating all merchandise at a discount.
The news of Sears' closing comes at the same time Macy's announced that it would be shutting down 125 stores, putting all of its New York locations in jeopardy.
This weekend shoppers were greeted with banners announcing that the store will close. Large yellow and red signs, that have become too much of a familiar sight in our area, proclaim that "everything must go." Currently, all merchandise is discounted from 10 to 40 percent off original prices.
A store representative told us that the staff only found out about the closing on Tuesday and as of now, there is not a set date for the Poughkeepsie store to close. A look around the store, however, revealed that there is not as much inventory in the aisles as there once was. Depending on how successful the liquidation goes, there may not be much left to purchase soon.
Traditionally, discounts do get deeper after the first few weeks of liquidation, so bargain hunters may want to wait it out to get a better deal. However, if items are not restocked, you can risk missing out on items that do sell out.
Sears stores in Middletown and Kingston were closed a few years ago and in July the Yonkers location closed its doors for good. As of now, the Sears location in Newburgh remains open.
