Plastic Bags Are out in Ulster, Timeline for Rest of the State

As of July 15, 2019 single use plastic bags are out in Ulster County NY. This means that when you go to the grocery store, you will be paying 5 cents per bag if you forget your re-usable bags in the car or at home.

There are a few other dates that you will need to know about 'bag bans' for our area and New York State.

Dutchess County the ban goes into effect on January 1, 2020
Statewide ban would take place on March 1, 2020

Keep in mind, that some individual towns across New York have also banned the use of single-use plastic bags. How should you plan for the ban? Remind yourself to put those reusable bags in your car and then actually remember to get them out and take them into the store.

Bags that are also included in the ban? Dog owners, you might find yourself with a lack of poop bags. You will be able to find them in a biodegradable form, ask for them at your local pet store. Cat owners, same for you with the bags that you use to scoop your cat litter. What will be your work around?

What can you do if you find yourself in a store without your bags? More than likely your retailer will be able to sell you a paper bag for 10 cents each. Also ask if there is a box that they are going to throw out, maybe you could use that instead? Remember not to panic, the business will want you to shop with them. Just politely ask them if they can help you out.
