Over Forty Thousand Pounds of Yogurt Spills All Over NY Highway

Well, talk about a slick commute. As we reported earlier, parts of western New York were battered by a recent snowstorm, that brought heavy snow squalls and high winds. This has obviously made driving conditions very hazardous in those parts. Now, add about 15 and half tons of Chobani to the pavement, and that's when things really get interesting. But what is all that yogurt doing on a highway?

State Police are saying weather more than likely played a role in an accident involving a tractor trailer Thursday afternoon. It was the payload this big truck was carrying that has some folks talking. And according to sources, the whole incident came together through quite a chain of events.

The Post Journal is reporting that a tractor trailer jackknifed on Interstate 86, blocking both lanes. Then, police say a second tractor-trailer struck the first truck, which caused the trailer to hit a nearby guardrail and separate from the tractor. That's when police say forty thousand pounds of yogurt spilled on to the highway below.

LoHud reports that the accident happened in the Chautauqua County town of Ellery, which is near the Pennsylvania border.

The driver of the second truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Firefighters and and HAZMAT crews assisted with the recovery and cleanup, though it is uncertain if HAZMAT had ever had to dispose of such a large yogurt spill.
