Details are emerging over the murder-suicide that has left three dead in upstate New York.

One of the deceased was a college basketball standout at SUNY Geneseo.

WGRZ is reporting that a distraught ex-boyfriend allegedly stabbed the male and female victims, both of which were students at SUNY Geneseo, before calling his father and taking his own life.

The victims were identified as 21 year-old Kelsey Annese of Webster, NY,  24 year-old Matthew Hutchinson of North Vancouver, British Columbia, and 24 year-old Colin Kingston of Geneseo.

Police say that Kingston, a former Geneseo student, recently ended a three year relationship with Annese.

Police say that Kingston brought a "large knife" to the off-campus home and confronted Annese and Hutchinson. An altercation ensued.

Police Chief Eric Osganian said that Kingston purchased the knife in the days beforehand.

Police say that four other people were in the house at the time of the confrontation, but due to the quickness of the struggle, they did not hear anything.

Annese played for three years on SUNY Geneseo's basketball team as a back-up point guard. Hutchinson played on the school's hockey team and was a volunteer firefighter in town.
