Have you ever seen the aftermath of an accident and wondered how something like this could happen?

The Rhinebeck Fire Department released photos of an accident that just occurred before 4pm on Tuesday that had many people jumping to conclusions. One of the images shows a SUV completely upside down. According to fire officials, the rollover auto accident happened on Slate Quarry Road in Rhinebeck, shutting the roadway down for a half-hour.

By the time responders appeared at the scene the two passengers had already removed themselves from the vehicle. The occupants were transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital for evaluation. According to a family member who posted an update on Facebook, both of the passengers were miraculously uninjured.

After seeing a huge SUV turned upside down on its roof, one can't help but wonder how an accident like this can happen. Many online commentators were quick to jump to conclusions, assuming that the car was speeding or the driver was somehow distracted. But it turns out that something completely out of the driver's control is most likely to blame for the car flipping over.

After the photo started generating a flood of comments on the Rhinebeck Fire Department's Facebook page, friends of the driver and passenger jumped in to clear up the confusion. According to someone close to the driver, the SUV apparently hit a pothole and overcorrected. Slate Quarry Road has lots of curves that wind back and forth. After hitting the pothole, the driver wasn't able to get control of the car and it flipped over.

According to other people commenting on the photo, the same thing has happened before on this road. Others weren't buying the story, insisting that the driver had to be speeding for something like this to happen. Either way, seeing a car flipped over on its roof is a great reminder that accidents like this can happen to anyone and it's important to always stay focused on the road.
