Human Chain Protest Planned Across Hudson River; When and Where

1,000 Hudson Valley protesters will link hands this weekend in support of several causes. If you don't like large crowds, you may want to steer clear.

It's been 40 years since Hands Across America. As a kid, I remember people heading outdoors to all stand and hold hands. What I don't remember is why we were doing it.

Well, now the concept is back in a slightly smaller version that will span the Hudson River, and organizers are very clear on what the message is behind the human chain.

1,000 People Expected on Walkway Over the Hudson

Hands Across the Hudson will take place this Sunday, August 30, on the Walkway Over the Hudson. Organizers say registration is required and attendance has been capped at 1,000 people.

The event will run from 1pm to 3pm, with protesters entering the Walkway from both the Poughkeepsie and Highland sides.

At 2pm, participants will attempt to form a massive human chain across the Hudson River by joining hands along the Walkway.

Organizers say the demonstration is being held to show support for a number of issues, including voting rights, free speech and freedom of the press, diversity and inclusion, affordable housing and healthcare, climate action and immigrant rights.

The event is also being promoted as a way to generate enthusiasm and political engagement ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

What to Expect on Sunday

Besides the human chain, organizers say there will be music, singing, speeches and opportunities to register to vote. Participants will also be able to make donations to local food pantries through a QR code.

While the protest is political in nature, participants will not be allowed to bring signs of any kind with them. Organizers also stress that the demonstration is intended to be peaceful. Participants are being asked to avoid confrontation and de-escalate any disagreements that may occur.

Expect a Busy Sunday Around the Walkway

Anyone planning to use the Walkway Over the Hudson on Sunday afternoon should probably expect it to be much more crowded than usual.

The demonstration happens to fall on the final day of the Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck, which is also expected to bring a large number of visitors into Dutchess County this weekend.

Expect heavy traffic and full parking lots on both sides of the Walkway Over the Hudson starting early Sunday.
