Owners of a new and very popular Hudson Valley restaurant say local officials are forcing them to shut down for good.

Cafe Con Leche recently opened up on Main Street in Wappinger. The family-owned and operated cafe and restaurant specializes in authentic Puerto Rican cuisine.

The building at 10 Main Street was built in 1852 and has been home to a number of establishments, including Jade Cafe.

Prior to Cafe Con Leche, the building was home to Lina's Deli and Catering but was vacant for some time before the Puerto Rican eatery moved their business from a small snack bar on the platform of the New Hamburg train station to Main Street.

However, Cafe Con Leche may be forced to close down. According to a Facebook post, residents have complained to the Town Of Poughkeepsie Zoning Department about the increase in traffic in the area.

"They have sent in numerous complaints to the town that has caused them to come down on us hard on the usage of the building. Although the previous tenants over the past 20 years have been a mix of Cafe's [sic], Coffeehouses and Deli's [sic] we can't legally operate a Cafe and must turn the space back into a Grocery/Deli usage or they will SHUT US DOWN," the cafe wrote on their Facebook page Friday night.

The business' attorneys are handling the situation and the eatery will remain open until a hearing, according to the Facebook post.

"Our biggest concern is the 10 employees that depend on Cafe Con Leche to operate. All of which have a family who depend on them to make a living to provide. However the outcome we'd like to thank everyone for their continued support and patronage over the past year," Cafe Con Leche wrote on Facebook.

Hudson Valley Post reached out the Town Of Poughkeepsie Zoning Department for comment but as of this writing haven't heard back. We will update this story if new information is made available.

***URGENT POST***

We feel obligated to let our customers know about the future of Cafe Con Leche. It has been brought to our attention by the Town Of Poughkeepsie Zoning Department that some of the residents in New Hamburg do not want us operating because of the increase in traffic in the area. Therefore they have sent in numerous complaints to the town that has caused them to come down on us hard on the usage of the building. Although the previous tenants over the past 20 years have been a mix of Cafe's, Coffeehouses and Deli's we can't legally operate a Cafe and must turn the space back into a Grocery/Deli usage or they will SHUT US DOWN. Our attorneys are handling it to the best of their abilities and we have left it in God's hands as that is where our faith lies. It's a shame that people can be so unsympathetic in wanting to put a small business under with no considerations on the impact it causes. Our biggest concern is the 10 employees that depend on Cafe Con Leche to operate. All of which have a family who depend on them to make a living to provide. However the outcome we'd like to thank everyone for their continued support and patronage over the past year. We will keep everyone updated on the public hearing date in hopes that you could all join us in support of Cafe Con Leche. May you all have a blessed day and we'll see you soon!
