Three strikes and you're out.

Major League Baseball has issued a lifetime suspension to former Mets closer Jenrry Mejia, after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The lifetime suspension is the longest drug-related ban MLB has ever issued.

The 26-year-old Meija was initially suspended for 80 games on April 11, 2015 after testing positive for Stanozolol. He returned on July 12 and appeared in seven games for the Mets, before being banned once again for 162 games on July 28 after a positive test for Stanozolol and Boldenone.

He becomes the first MLB player ever to receive a permanent ban for steroids.

The Mets issued the following statement regarding Mejia's suspension:

We were deeply disappointed to hear that Jenrry has again violated Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. We fully support MLB's policy toward eliminating performance enhancing substances from the sport. As per the Joint Drug Program, we will have no further comment on this suspension.

Mejia's made 113 appearances with the Mets, with a 3.68 ERA.
