Following last week’s massive fire at the Gap Distribution Center in Fishkill, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced there will be no layoffs.

“I have also directed President and CEO of the Empire State Development Corporation, Howard Zemsky, and Commissioner of the Department of Labor, Roberta Reardon, to work with Gap Inc. to ensure there are no layoffs, and that there is a continuity of employment for the employees at the facility,” Gov. Cuomo stated. “While my staff works with Gap, the company has provided assurances that there will be no job disruptions during the process.”

Tuesday, State Police and the AFL completed their on-site investigation of the fire and determined the fire was set on purpose.  Police did not provide further details other than saying their investigation is continuing.

This photo was circulating around social media sites, which may have provided clues as to how the fire started. The photo also showed boxes on fire in the picking area of the warehouse, where the fire was believed to have started.

Firefighters from Dutchess, Putnam, and Ulster Counties spent around six hours putting out the blaze and hotspots last Monday.

“An aggressive interior attack was made by firefighters who were driven out by deteriorating conditions,” Fishkill Fire Chief Brandon Knapp said during a press conference. “A transition to a defensive attack was made.”

Around 100 Gap employees were inside the building at the time of the fire. They were all evacuated with no reported injuries.

“One firefighter sustained a minor injury,” Knapp said.

Around 600 employees were left out of work. Gov. Cuomo also announced tax credits to ensure operations resume as soon as possible.

“The state has invested $12 million in Excelsior tax credits as part of this project and we will continue to work in partnership with Gap Inc. to ensure they can resume their operations as quickly as possible and continue to generate growth in the region,” Cuomo said.
