Former Poughkeepsie High School Student Becomes New Principal
Poughkeepsie High School welcomed their new principal, who graduated from the school, and has spent 20 years educating in the Bronx.
Kelleyann Royce-Giron, a 1990 graduate of the school, will officially start Feb. 18, following a lengthy interview process that began in October 2019.
Royce-Giron has 20 years of experience in the education field, starting her career after graduating from Poughkeepsie as a member of Poughkeepsie Middle School’s team. She has been a counselor with the New York City Department of Education, eventually becoming a special education teacher and moving into an administrative role in September 2016 as an assistant principal.
Currently, she is the principal at New Venture STEAM Academy in the Bronx, a position she has held since September 2018.
She was welcomed and following a thunderous round of applause from the audience, Royce-Giron got emotional about graduating from the school and returning home. She showed the crowd how she walked the stage at graduation and then talked about what her vision was for the school’s future.
Royce-Giron’s first order of business will be meeting staff and students, followed by a deep dive into the data.
At the end of the meeting, audience members - adults and students alike - took time to personally welcome her and speak with her. She interacted with the students attending from the Participation in Government class, telling them to, “Make sure you get out to the community so they know how amazing we are.”
