All puns aside, obesity is a huge problem in the United States.

The data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that more than three quarters of adults in this country are either overweight or obese. We, as a nation, seriously need to get up and start being more physically active.

But where are the states with most obese people? What about the least overweight?

The website WalletHub has compiled the data from all 50 states (as well as the District of Columbia) using seventeen key indicators of weight-related issues.

Once again, the American south seems to have the most overweight and obese people:

  1. Mississippi
  2. Lousiana
  3. Arkansas
  4. Kentucky
  5. Tennessee

How about the least? Looks like a few of neighboring states in the Northeast did pretty well.

    • 51. Utah
    • 50. Colorado
    • 49. New Jersey
    • 48. Massachusetts
    • 47. Hawaii
    • 46. Connecticut

And New York? Not bad, we came in at #41.

It's admittedly tough to maintain healthy habits these days due to the high cost of eating well, plus trying to balance physical activity with your busy work schedules.

This is why you have to set aside about thirty minutes a day for walking or exercise. Just a few strolls around the block can be a good start. Also, tracking calories can really help. You don't necessarily have to eliminate your favorite meals, just try to watch your portion size.

These are just a few helpful tips to start. There are so many diet and exercise routines you can find online that it can be a bit overwhelming. It doesn't have to be. Just find a plan that suits you and go for it!
