The Internet is buzzing over construction work being done on the old Sonic location on Route 9 in Wappingers.

Crews were hard at work on the old Sonic restaurant this week, causing many people to wonder what was happening. Sonic has sat empty in the Wappingers Plaza since closing its doors several years ago. Just one of the many empty stores on Route 9, the old Sonic has been a challenge to fill because of its unique style and design.

The long, drive-up bays and small building with outdoor seating is a very specific type of architecture that would need to find just the right business to purchase. Many have been hoping that someone would tear down the old building and put something new there, but nothing has happened.

This week there was finally some signs of life at the old building, causing many to wonder just what business was moving in. Facebook was full of guesses from Hudson Valley residents trying to figure out what was going on.

A new awning over the drive-thru window had many people thinking that Chick-Fil-A was building their first Hudson Valley location at the site. Sadly, that's not true.

Upon further investigation, a large crane and camera were found in front of the building with crews stringing cables and wires across the parking lot. It looks like we've been fooled again by HBO. Sadly, the old Sonic building is not being remodeled. It's just being used for a scene from the miniseries I Know This Much Is True, filming at various places throughout our area this summer.

Residents were fooled by the same crew back in April when a Blockbuster Video store appeared just a mile up the road in the Kohl's Plaza. It turned out that the video store was also just a set being used by HBO.
