Friday, March 7 is National Cereal Day and a new survey shows New Yorkers won't be celebrating with one of the country's most popular brands.

The average American has anywhere from three to a dozen boxes of different cereals in their home at all times. Cold cereal has been the go-to breakfast option for generations and is now more popular than ever. It seems that every week there's a new flavor or variety of cereal that comes to market, but it's the classics that remain top sellers throughout the country.

According to research by Evident, the most popular cereal in the county is Cheerios, with 12% of the market share. After that, it's Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, Honey Bunches of Oats and Reece's Puffs.

It turns out that New Yorkers have very different tastes than the rest of the country.

New York's Top Cereal Choices

Vegas Insider recently analyzed the most popular cereals in New York State and discovered that at least two of the country's favorite cereal brands didn't even crack the top 12.

New York shares the country's love of Cheerios, ranking it the number one cereal choice. That's no surprise since Cheerios is a staple in most toddler diets and a heart-healthy option for many adults. But while New York is on the same page with the rest of the country with Cheerios, the rest of their favorites take an interesting turn.

Reece's Puffs, which is the fourth most popular cereal in the country didn't make the top 12 list in New York. Another glaring omission was Apple Jax, which is another one of the country's most popular cereals. New York is famous for its love of apples. Our largest city is even nicknamed the Big Apple. However, most New Yorkers want nothing to do with an apple-flavored cereal.

Here is the full list of New York's favorite cereals.

  1. Cheerios
  2. Lucky Charms
  3. Fruity Pebbles
  4. Cinnamon Toast Crunch
  5. Frosted Flakes
  6. Froot Loops
  7. Corn Flakes
  8. Rice Krispies
  9. Special K
  10. Raisin Bran
  11. Trix
  12. Cap'n Crunch
