The World’s Oldest Forest Is Here In New York State

All throughout New York State, there are historic sites and landmarks along with undiscovered stories of the past.

Some towns in New York State date back the 1600's. As we pass by towns, villages and hamlets where we reside, take a look around at the scenery including the trees and roads. 

Some of these have untold stories within New York State.

New York State's biggest tree is located in upstate, New York.  Scenic Hudson provided information regarding NYS's biggest tree. They explained that Fred Breglia who is an arborist, discovered New York State's largest tree in Rensselaer County.

Scenic Hudson also explained that this tree is an eastern cottonwood where it's

"108 feet tall and 33 feet 9 1/4 inches in circumference, it *might* also hold the record for largest of its kind in the nation!"

Now, this would be a tree worth hugging!

Have you spotted this tree before? It's possible you have driven past this tree several times without knowing the historical information that goes along with it.

The oldest tree of it's kind in America is located within Orange County, NY. Scenic Hudson provided information about this famous tree, the Balmville Tree.

"it's the oldest Eastern cottonwood on record and a beloved Hudson Valley landmark."

They also mentioned that the Balmville Tree was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The Balmville Tree is located on Old Balmville Rd, Newburgh, NY 12550. This historical landmark carries on stories from a different time in place for us to observe in person.

Have you ever been to the world's oldest forest which is located in New York State?

Science.com  shared information about this historic, New York forest. They claimed that there are 385 million year old rocks on site that

"contain the fossilized woody roots of dozens of ancient trees.The find marks a turning point in Earth's history."

Science.com also shared that

"When trees evolved these roots, they helped pull carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and lock it away, radically shifting the planet's climate and leading to the atmosphere we know today."

Fossil Forest Is The World's Oldest Forest In New York State

The Town of Cairo, NY mentioned that the study that was published about the oldest forest is called Fossil Forest and it is located in Cairo, NY. They also shared that Fossil Forest is 2 to 3 millions years older than another New York forest.

A forest located in Gilboa, NY was once known as the oldest forest until a study was done in 2019 claiming that Fossil Forest in Cairo, NY was indeed, the oldest.

Fossil Forest Is Located In Cairo, NY But Can It Be Visited?

The Town of Cairo, NY continued to share information about Fossil Forest and if it can or cannot be visited.

They explained,

"The Fossil Forest is located on Town of Cairo property and is not open to the public."

 

"It is very important that we protect this area for future study, analysis and safe enjoyment."

While we may have gotten excited that we could visit Fossil Forest in New York State, we can continue to learn more about it and what other historic information we may come across.

Where Is Cario, NY Located Exactly?

Cairo, NY is located in Greene County.

The Town of Cario shared that Cairo, NY was established in the early 1800's. This rural community is a place where residents work, live and enjoy the views and landscapes of Greene County, NY.
