It is just a fact that no matter how hard we try to resist, we will eat more food with higher calorie content over the next two months. Between Thanksgiving and the New Year, we will inevitably be at more gatherings offering delicious foods that are full of yummy calories we might not eat at other times of the year.

Recently KURU Footwear released information regarding how many steps it takes to walk off some of our favorite holiday treats. They estimated that the average American will ingest 3,348 calories at Thanksgiving dinner alone.

So where can we walk off all those calories? I started thinking about the best places in the Hudson Valley to do that in the colder weather. We are fortunate that just about every town has at least a park, if not a greenway, in the form of a rail trail where we can burn off some of those treats we will be eating this year.

The Walkway over the Hudson is a level trail with a great view and is accessible from both Ulster and Dutchess Counties. Both sides of the park have extensive trail systems that lead to it. This means you can choose your distance. The Hudson Valley also has the Empire State Trail that stretches from New York City to Upstate New York.

One more trail worth mentioning is the one that is both scenic and easy to traverse. It also allows for walking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing if the weather is right. The River to Ridge (R2R) sits just outside New Paltz, New York. It offers a parking lot and travels through one of the Hudson Valley's most iconic views.

Make Your Walking Trails by Owning 70 Plus Acres in Ulster County, New York

Island for Sale in the Wallkill River

The house for sale at 1091 Albany Post Road is small but stunning. The 70-plus acres that come with the sale are beautiful but the best part of this house is that you will also be the proud owner of an island in the Wallkill River in Gardiner New York.
