A 49-year-old member of the New York State Police has died following a motorcycle crash on the Taconic State Parkway in the Town of East Fishkill, NY.

Motorcycle Accident Claims Life of New York State Police Sergeant

The New York State Police (NYSP) have announced the tragic passing of 49-year-old Sergeant/Station Commander Nigel K. Barnett of Poughkeepsie, NY, following a motorcycle accident in East Fishkill, NY.

According to a NYSP press release, members of the State Police at the Stormville barracks were called to respond to a reported single-vehicle motorcycle collision on the Taconic State Parkway on Tuesday, September 16th, 2025.

Motorcycle Crash on the Taconic State Parkway

The press release states that the accident happened at approximately 6:31 a.m., on the southbound side of the Taconic State Parkway near mile marker 36.1 in the Town of East Fishkill.

According to police, their preliminary investigation determined that Sergeant Barnett was operating a 2025 Ducati motorcycle on the southbound side of the Taconic when he lost control. Police said that he was ejected from the motorcycle and subsequently struck the guardrail on the western shoulder of the parkway.

First responders performed immediate life-saving measures at the scene, but sadly, Sergeant Barnett was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Sergeant Barnett was a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police, serving most recently as the Station Commander at State Police Cortlandt, Troop K.
