Blue Star Moms of the Hudson Valley Honored For Their Work

This month's recipient is an organization made up of local military moms who understand firsthand the sacrifices made by military members and their families back home.

Every month, 101.5 WPDH, MHA of Dutchess County and Mid-Hudson Pump shine a spotlight on a different veteran organization and donate $500 to help them continue their work. This month, we've selected Blue Star Mothers of the Hudson Valley NY15 for their ongoing support of local veterans, active-duty service members and military families.

Blue Star Mothers of the Hudson Valley is made up of mothers and other caregivers of those who are serving or have served in the military. The local chapter supports families throughout the Hudson Valley, giving military moms a network of people who understand the worry, pride and challenges that come with having a child in the Armed Forces.  But much of their work is focused on giving back to the men and women who have served.

One of the group's biggest efforts is aimed at veteran suicide prevention. The Hudson Valley chapter created a grant program that provides money directly to organizations offering mental health, wellness and other support services to veterans. Since launching the program, the Blue Star Mothers have awarded tens of thousands of dollars to organizations working directly with veterans in our area.

Those grants have supported several familiar Hudson Valley veteran organizations, including Mental Health America of Dutchess County, VetZero and the Hudson Valley National Center for Veteran Reintegration. The money helps fund everything from peer counseling and mental health programs to efforts aimed at preventing veteran homelessness.

The Blue Star Mothers also support active-duty military members and their families through community projects and fundraising. And when a military family suffers the ultimate loss, the organization is there to support Gold Star families and honor those who died while serving our country.

For these moms, supporting the military doesn't end when their own sons or daughters come home. Their experiences have inspired them to continue serving other military families and veterans throughout the Hudson Valley.
