Beacon Train Station Lot to Become Massive Apartment Complex
There will soon be another 256 families living in Beacon, New York thanks to a development deal from the MTA.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board has granted approval to Jonathan Rose Companies to begin work on a residential complex on the parking lot of the Beacon Metro-North Station. The development will include 265 units of "mixed-income housing."
According to Governor Hochul, the project is part of the state's plan to repurpose underused property owned by the state for much-needed housing. People have been flocking to Beacon, New York over the past decade, causing real estate prices to spiral out of control.
Many transplants from New York City have moved to Beacon since the pandemic to enjoy its quieter atmosphere and simpler quality of life while still being just 80 minutes away from Manhattan by train.
Changes to Beacon Train Station
While the new complex will take over the adjacent parking lot, there are plans to build a structured parking garage that will make sure commuters can still access the train. Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino applauded the project, saying that the complex and garage will transform the old parking lot into its "highest and best use while maintaining parking for commuters".
The waterfront housing units will provide quick access to the train, as well as putting residents within walking distance of Beacon's Main Street with shops, entertainment and dining.
It's unclear when the project will be complete or what the rent will be. Regardless of the price, it's likely that there will be high demand for the units because of their proximity to transportation, view of the Hudson River and access to the City of Beacon.
