In a shocking twist, police now believe that a man who was thought to have been murdered by a teen, who was on the run, was actually killed by the mother of his children.

On Thursday around 6 p.m., City of Poughkeepsie police received a call from Vassar Hospital reporting that a stabbing victim was brought into their emergency room by a private vehicle. The victim, 42-year-old Nakia Bruton of Hyde Park, was stabbed once in the chest, he later died at the hospital.

On Wednesday, 43-year-old of Marcena R. Edwards of Hyde Park, the mother of Bruton’s children, was charged with manslaughter. Edwards stabbed Bruton once in the chest during an argument, police say.

Edwards and Bruton were riding in their vehicle on Winnikee Avenue when the alleged stabbing occurred. Edwards was driving and Bruton was a passenger, their infant child was also in the vehicle.

The couple have several children together, City of Poughkeepsie police told Hudson Valley Post.

Initially police were told that Bruton was killed by a teenage man between the age of 15 to 18. A story that was fabricated by Bruton’s actual killer, police say.

“She made it up," City of Poughkeepsie Police Lt. MJ Clark told Hudson Valley Post. “She told us that they were approached by a group of teens, there was an argument and one of them stabbed Bruton in the chest.”

Edwards allegedly told authorities words were exchanged when a group of teenage men, crossed the street in front of the car she was driving. During the argument, a teen ran up to Brurton and stabbed him in the chest, when Brurton got out of the car. The 42-year-old fell back into the car and was driven to the hospital by Edwards, where he later died.

The incident was originally reported to have taken place on Smith Street. However, further investigation revealed that the incident actually took place on Winnikee Avenue, police say.

Anyone who was in the area of Winnikee Avenue on Thursday September 14 between 5:40 p.m. and 5:50 p.m. and may have witnessed this incident, or anyone who may have video of this incident, is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 451-7577.
