Looks like the plan to build a five-story, 163-room Marriott SpringHill Suites on a contaminated site is well underway.

Lohud.com reports that Bilwin Development Affiliates still plans to build the hotel and a restaurant at a location in the Village of Tuckahoe that tested positive for at least twenty one contaminates.

The land was used as marble quarry until the year 1958. For over twenty years after, it was used as a municipal dumping ground, and then an auto repair lot. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation project manager Kevin Carpenter said the area was a significant threat.

In areas that looked like there could be more contamination, we've requested more sampling.

The approved remedy for this site will be protective for the proposed use, and the site will be monitored following remediation to ensure that it remains protective into the future.

Bilwin initially made an application to build on the site in 2014, but was rejected. The company has since hired a consulting firm to test and monitor the site, as well as offer solutions to deter any potential toxins.

Many in the village have fought the development, given it's close proximity to neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. There are many concerns, such as the possibility of contaminants reaching the water and air.

Village residents sounded off at a four hour long board meeting Monday. Another meeting in the village is scheduled for mid September, where Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond believes a decision will be made.
