Where Would You End Up If You Dug Straight Through the Earth From Poughkeepsie? [MAP]
Looking to waste some time?
Everyone's heard the joke about digging a hole straight through the Earth and ending up somewhere in China. That's what always happened in all the old cartoons, right?
Well, obviously it doesn't really work that way. Aside from the lack of time and funding, you'd be crushed by the pressure which is equivalent to standing at the bottom of the ocean before being incinerated by temperatures reaching over 9,000 F degrees.
So far, the deepest humans have reached is around 7.5 miles down at the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Murmask, Russia. And it took over twenty years for people to reach that depth before the project was abandoned.
But lets just say that it was possible. If you really wanted to know where the exact opposite side of the planet is, then check out this interactive map posted at Antipodes. So if you're in Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, New York City, or even Cleveland...where would you really end up?
Very simple: just enter your location and click FIND. Looks like we're all going to need some scuba gear nearby. Hey, this has got to be better than the endless news over political scandal and videos of people fist fighting at Golden Corral (well, those can be entertaining sometimes).
Also, check out the Antipode locations of some major cities.
