UPS will hire nearly 100,000 temporary workers this holiday season, but they will also raise their rates

United Parcel Service Inc. expects to hire 95,000 temporary workers this holiday season when daily shipments rise by roughly half.

The company is taking steps to cope with the explosion of online shopping. During the 2016 holiday season, the daily shipping volume exceeded 30 million packages, compared to the non-peak volume of 19 million.

About 35 percent of the temporary workers land permanent postions, according to Bloomburg.

This year, UPS will implement a new peak surcharge on packages shipped to U.S. residences over certain weeks during late November and December. It will add a 27-cent charge to packages sent using its ground network and a charge of 81 cents or 97 cents for air-shipped packages, depending on level of service
