Showers and thunderstorms could give the East Coast quite the drenching late this week and end the summer heat until next year. Accuweather says that a cold front will move in by Friday and ease the heat and humidity that has been plaguing the area since Labor Day weekend.

Record-high temperatures were felt across a large portion of the Northeast on Tuesday as a very warm, humid air mass continued to build over the region. The temperature reached 97 F in Poughkeepsie on Tuesday, breaking the old record set in 2007 by five degrees. New York City's Central Park reached 97 F as well, making it the hottest day in September in 32 years (97 F on Sept. 10, 1983 and 99 F on Sept. 11, 1983). Albany saw temps reaching 94 F.
