The New York State Police conducted a five-day crackdown on distracted driving, dubbed "Operation Hang Up," and they issued thousands of tickets. 

State police say they issued 17,447 tickets during the 5-day crackdown. They ran the operation April 10 through April 15, as reported by CBS Albany. They were looking for drivers using their phone, failing to use their seat belt, driving while impaired, and violating the "Move Over" law.

Here's the breakdown for some of the tickets issued:

  • 2,752 tickets for talking or texting on a cell phone
  • 5,557 for speeding
  • 187 for driving while intoxicated
  • 924 for safety restraint violations
  • 223 for failing to move over when passing police pulled over on the shoulder
