Crisis was avoided after 17 miners were rescued from an upstate New York mine, which happens to be one of the world's deepest salt mines.

The Daily Freeman reports the 10 hour incident was a result of a broken elevator more than 900 feet down. The Cayuga Salt Mine, with a depth of 2,300 feet, is more than 400 feet taller than the Freedom Tower. The miners were on their way to the bottom when their elevator broke down at 10pm Wednesday.

The miners were unharmed but very cold. The air temperature was the same as the air outside, so blankets, heat packs and other supplies were lowered to the men. A crane was in place by 7 AM to begin extracting the trapped miners. By 8:30, all were safely above ground.
