Major Company Cutting Half of Employees in Upstate New York
Another round of layoffs will affect some of the company's 21,000 employees across the country.
In April of 2024, one of the biggest companies in the county General Electric (GE) announced that they would be splitting the company into three separate, standalone public companies.
When GE announced the split to form GE Vernova, GE HealthCare, and GE Aerospace many wondered if any jobs would be lost once the transition was complete.
GE Announces Round of New York Lay-Offs
According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed last week GE Aerospace will lay off nearly half the workers at its site located at 1 River Rd. in Schenectady, New York. The WARN notice stated that the company is expected to let go 72 of the 152 workers at its Schenectady, NY location.
The employees who are affected by this round of layoffs were not part of any union and were notified that their positions with the jet engine company will end at the end of the year.

GE Aerospace, which focuses on making and servicing jet engines, is currently headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has been in Schenectady since 1892 when GE Electric made its headquarters in the upstate New York City nicknamed "Electric City".
Severance Packages?
All of the affected employees belong to a services unit that was inherited by GE Aerospace after GE's spinoff earlier this year. A company spokesperson told Reuters that the layoffs could be attributed to the spinoff and that all of the employees were told that the layoffs would start on December 31st and conclude on January 31st, 2025.
All affected employees were offered a "comprehensive" severance package, that would include "support for transition to new employment".
