Watch Video of Kansas Sunset Tornado that Becomes Night Monster
It began as an iconic Kansas sight. It was a tornado spotted by storm chasers near Emporia, Kansas in the distance as if it were painted against the sunset. It would become a nighttime monster that would also be captured on home security cameras.
Storm chaser Daniel Shaw was following a supercell in the early evening of April 19, 2023 just outside of Emporia, Kansas. It's not often you consider a tornado beautiful especially when property damage and loss of life is a possibility, but this twister against the sunset was stunning.
That same storm would later drop a violent tornado later rated a strong EF-2 by the National Weather Service survey teams.
A doorbell camera at a home in Emporia, Kansas would show the monster it became with the twister and power flashes along with lightning being seen in the distance.
There were a total of 8 tornadoes confirmed by the National Weather Service out of that storm system that crossed Chase County. The two strongest were EF-2 twisters. While there was lots of property damage reported, it does not appear there were any injuries or deaths connected to that storm.
