In the past year we've seen a lot in local media about the surge in gun violence in America. The evening news paints New York City as a war zone. Gun crime is up in New York City. It's believed that a big part of the is due to the millions of dollars in funding for the NYPD was moved towards community outreach. Joe Biden even announced recently that several cities that have seen a spike un gun violence could even use leftover relief from COVID to use towards hiring more law enforcement.

Gun crime might be up in New York City but how are the numbers an hour north in the Hudson Valley. All of the information is readily available at County Crime Index. They measure violent crime, property crime and violent crime with a firearm. We decided to specifically list gun crime by individual counties.

Obviously, in a perfect world, there would be no gun crime. However, based on each county in the Hudson Valley's population the numbers are quite low. However, it should be noted that these numbers are based on reports from 2020. These numbers could be different for 2021.

The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.
