Dire Strait's debut album was released on October 7, 1978, on Warner Bros Records. The album produced the single 'Sultans of Swing' and has been certified double-platinum.

Critics were receptive to the album, with one critic calling it "remarkably accomplished for a debut".

The album went number one in France and Australia, peaking at number two in the United States.
