Cops: Drunk Man Crashes Car After High-Speed Chase in Ulster

A Hudson Valley man is accused of crashing his car and leading police on a high-speed chase while driving drunk in the area.

On Sunday around 5:45 p.m., New York State Police in Highland responded to a report of a Dodge Ram pickup traveling recklessly on State Route 32 in the town of Rosendale.

The vehicle was previously involved in a pursuit with the Town of Rosendale Police Department, police say.

A trooper noticed the Dodge Ram at the intersection of State Route 213 and State Route 32 allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed and passing vehicles in a no passing zone.

The trooper followed the vehicle into the town of Gardiner where the pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety, according to New York State Police.

Around 6 p.m., State Police responded to a report of a car accident on State Route 44/55 in the town of Gardiner that involved a white Dodge pickup.

The initial trooper responded to the scene and allegedly noticed Michael B. Smith, 32, of Accord walking away from the crashed vehicle.

Michael Smith was charged with reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated with a previous conviction within 10 years, both felonies, and reckless driving a misdemeanor.

He was arraigned in the Town of Esopus Court and remanded to Ulster County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. Police say their investigation is ongoing.
