Manufacturers are yanking antacid Zantac, both in prescription and over-the-counter forms, after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation, CNN reported Wednesday, April 1. According to the article:

The FDA noted that an ongoing investigation has determined that levels of a contaminant in the heartburn medications increase over time and when stored at higher-than-normal temperatures, pose a risk to public health. The contaminant, N-nitrosodimethylamine or NDMA, is a probable human carcinogen.

FDA leaders noted that many samples they tested did not have concerning levels of NDMA, but they didn't want Zantac to be available to the public since there was no way to know how it had been stored and for how long.

Consumers are asked to stop taking any Zantac pills or liquid medications that they have and to dispose of it according to the instructions on the packaging or insert, according to the CNN article. They should not buy more.

Meanwhile, Hudson Valley law firm Mainetti & Mainetti, P.C. is trying to help patients who learned they have cancer after taking Zantac or took it for an extended period of time, according to the firm's website. Prolonged exposure to NDMA is believed to cause cancers of the digestive tract, including:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Intestinal cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Liver cancer
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Prostate (early onset)
  • Pancreatic
  • Leukemia
