Staying Safe When The Winds Start Whipping Around

After a snowy, stormy week, we now need to worry about the winds as the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning in effect for Ulster and Dutchess counties until 7 tonight. Other counties in the Hudson Valley remain under a Wind Advisory.
We all know that when the winds start whipping around, limbs, and even trees, could come tumbling down taking with them power lines and causing power outages. In fact, Central Hudson reported today that there were more than 10,000 homes and businesses without power. While their crews are out working to get everyone back up and running, they have a few tips to keep you safe should the power go out where you are.
According to Central Hudson, if you see a downed line, always assume that it is live and stay at least 30 feet away from it. Keep in mind that downed power lines often get tangled in tree limbs, so be aware of where you are standing and what you are touching. If the power does go out, avoid using candles if you can, battery-powered lights or even battery-powered candles are a much safer option.
If you have a generator, always follow the manufacturers instructions and be sure to shut off the main breaker when in use. Report any gas odors to 911. Have Central Hudson's number, or the number to your power company, in your phone so that you can make a call as soon as you can, or check on the status of when power will be restored to your area.
