An investigation is underway after a one-car fatal crash occurred on Route 9 Monday morning. 

The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a serious car accident on Route 9 near the Columbia County border. Once on the scene officers observed that the accident was a one car-crash with one occupant.

An initial investigation showed that the vehicle was traveling south on Route 9 when it left the road and struck a tree.

The car's occupant was unconscious and trapped in the vehicle when officers arrived. The individual was later pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim was withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.

Route 9 was closed for three hours as the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, along with the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office, investigated the scene.

According to the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, this is still an ongoing investigation, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
