Experts are saying that conditions are good for catching a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis in certain areas of the Hudson Valley tonight.

According to Accuweather, our area is in prime position to see a very rare light show supplied by mother nature. New York State is located within a section of the Northeast that is predicted to have a "good chance" of seeing the Northern Lights.

The Geophysical Institute says that "Auroral activity" is high and will remain that way through this evening. Solar wind particles are expected to interact with the geomagnetic field lines, which have dipped further South, giving us an unusually good chance of seeing a spectacular show. The electromagnetic conditions also coincide with some clear skies that will increase the odds of catching the lights overhead.

Accuweather warns that it might not be as easy as walking outside and looking at the sky to see the Aurora. You will need to be in a very dark location, away from city lights and obstructions on the horizon. You may have a better chance of catching the lights with a camera on a tripod set for a very long exposure.

Those who truly want to experience the Northern Lights should consider joining WPDH on our trip to Iceland, where our tour group will have the very best chance of actually getting a look at the lights with the naked eye. The trip is set for March which is prime viewing season for the Northern Lights in Iceland. The trip is filling up fast, so you may want to reserve your spot now if seeing the Aurora is on your "bucket list."

If you don't see the Aurora Borealis, you still may want to look closely at the sky this evening. There will be a meteor shower tonight that will continue through the middle of the month. Each hour you can expect to se 10 to 15 brightly shining meteors traveling through the sky.
