Police are still hoping for answers after a newborn baby with the umbilical cord still attached was found dead in a vacant lot.

On Tuesday around 10:30 p.m., Port Jervis City police officers responded to a vacant lot located on Orange Street at the intersection with Hornbeck Avenue for a report of a dead infant lying on the ground inside the vacant lot.

Officers responded to the scene and found the dead baby. The baby appeared to have been born recently because the umbilical cord was still attached, police say.

Police detective identified and spoke with the infant's mother but her name wasn't released and she hasn't been charged as of this writing as police continue to investigate, ABC reports.

A detective told the New Jersey Herald, the baby was out in the freezing cold without any clothing. The baby was found in Orange County, about two miles from New Jersey.

Based upon circumstances and undisclosed information learned at the scene, officers sealed off the scene as a crime scene for forensic processing.

Port Jervis City police detectives and uniformed patrol officers with the assistance of investigators with the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit, Orange County District Attorney’s Office and Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office are conducting a thorough investigation which has already included working throughout the night, forensically processing the scene, interviewing neighbors as well as potential witnesses to attempt to ascertain the facts and circumstances that occurred prior to, and leading up to, the infant’s death.

An autopsy is being performed by the Office of the Orange County Medical Examiner and are awaiting toxicology and results.

Police are urging members of the public to contact the Port Jervis Police Department at 845-856-5101 if they should have information related to this incident. Updated information will be provided within the next couple of days as it develops.
