Hudson Valley Bank Temporarily Closes All Branches After Security Incident

If you bank with Sawyer Savings Bank, make note that all of the bank's branch locations remain temporarily closed following what officials say is a technical disruption that may have been caused by a data security incident.

The Ulster County-based bank first experienced the disruption on Monday, August 3, and has been working ever since to restore its systems.

In an update shared Thursday, August 6, Sawyer Savings Bank President and CEO James P. Whitaker said the issue initially appeared to be a technical disruption affecting portions of the bank's network. As the investigation continued, officials learned the incident is now believed to be linked to a vulnerability involving one of the bank's vendors.

While branches in New Paltz, Highland, Saugerties and Marlboro remain closed, customers can still access their accounts through the bank's online and mobile banking platforms. According to the bank, customers are still able to check balances, make deposits and withdraw funds digitally.

No Evidence Customer Accounts Were Directly Impacted

The bank said there is currently no evidence that customer accounts have been directly affected, and officials have not seen any evidence of malicious use of customer data. One the bank was alerted to the incident it immediately brought in third-party cybersecurity specialists to work alongside its technology team to investigate and restore affected systems as quickly and securely as possible.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine whether any customer data was impacted. If investigators determine that sensitive information was compromised, the bank says it will notify and support any affected customers.

Bank Working to Reopen Branches

At this time, there's no timetable for when branch locations will reopen.

In a statement, Whitaker thanked customers for their patience and understanding, saying the bank is working around the clock to securely restore its systems while continuing to strengthen the security of its network.

The bank says it will continue providing updates as more information becomes available and branch locations are able to reopen. We'll update this article if and when more information is released.
