I recently read a post from a locally owned Hudson Valley business that had me stop and think for a moment. I am someone who shops locally, but do I always? Sadly I had to answer "No" after reading the letter the business posted.

When it comes to gifts and even small essentials around the home I will go to local farm markets, specialty shops, and even restaurants to grab the items I want. I can't remember the last time I bought jelly at the grocery. Why would I when we have farm-fresh jams and jellies available? So why is it that when I go for home improvement items I find myself at Lowes?

Hudson Valley Hardware Store President Writes Letter to Community

Last week the President of Beck's Hardware put a letter out that got me thinking I could do better and by that, I mean more shopping locally when it comes to home hardware. Honestly, I hadn't realized that Becks Hardware who I knew had a store in Pine Bush had taken over New Paltz True Value. Not sure how that got past me but it did.

As I read the letter that was posted I started thinking about where I shop for paint and other things I use around the house. At one point I was shopping at New Paltz Agway for stuff for my yard but when they closed I ended up back at Lowes.

I am embarrassed to say I have even bought a lawn mower on Amazon, but that is another story and in my defense, it was out of necessity. Either way, I am going to try to do better.

Michael Beck, the President of the Beck's Family of Stores has inspired me to shop local for things I have been turning over to convenience. Did you know that many of our local hardware stores have curbside pickup and local delivery you just have to inquire.

Beck's Hardware Palns to Expand Two of Its Stores in New York

Lowes is on my way home and I have their credit card, but that is no reason not to plan better and at least get to know what is on the shelves at my local hardware store. Mr. Beck also sparked my curiosity because he mentioned that they are expanding their stores in Pine Bush and New Paltz.

According to the Letter, Beck's Pine Bush will grow by 4,000 square feet, and New Paltz will grow by 2,000 feet. Michael even asked for your suggestions in his Facebook post.

Feel free to send me a message, or stop into the office with your comments good or bad. I want to hear it all. Where are we missing the mark? What do you want to see in our expansions? What can we do to bring you back into shopping locally? (Beck's Hardware Home Garden via Facebook)

If you are thinking you should visit a local hardware store instead of the big box version then it would be good for you to know that Becks has 5 locations. Beck's is in New Paltz, Monroe, and Wallkill and they have two stores in Pine Bush.
