It's one of the hottest gifts for the holidays, but in some cases it has proven to be quite a safety concern.

The hoverboard is a portable, rechargeable, battery powered scooter that has become the craze in the 2015. But now firefighters are warning residents not to charge the devices while out of the house after a hoverboard caught fire in a Westchester home Sunday night.

The Chappaqua Fire Department say that the device was charging in the home when an electrical issue occurred. NBC NY reports that the board combusted, causing smoke damage and singing the wood floors underneath.

Fortunately, the homeowners were home at the time and were able to contain any further damage to their house.

This isn't the first time one of these hoverboards has caught fire. There have been reports of damaged boards in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Washington.

They were recently banned in New York City because they cannot be registered with the DMV. People caught riding the boards on city streets or sidewalks could be fined as much as $200.
