If you heard a very loud sound in parts of Eastern Dutchess County Wednesday, you're not alone. The Poughkeepsie Journal says the loud boom was heard Wednesday evening at around 7:30 p.m.

Now the boom may have left some residents in the area around Dover confused and maybe even a little concerned So, what's going on? Was it natural causes? Fireworks? Military? A meteor? Aliens?

Maybe it was this guy?

Well, no. The actual answer is a bit less dramatic. The Journal is reporting that the sound was a controlled depressurization of a section of pipeline. The over four hundred mile long project is owned by Iroquois Gas Transmission, which has a number of sites across the Northeast.

According to the Iroquois website, the pipeline stretches from Hunts Point in the Bronx and extends across the Long Island Sound, up through western Connecticut, and all the way north through the Hudson Valley and up to the Canadian border.

Dover happens to be where one of the compressor station sites is located.
