"We thought we would get a good laugh out of it for ourselves and the people around us, but we did it to protect ourselves and have fun,” Tre Mayo told the New York Times.

The group played three-on-three games for about 90 minutes while about 40 people watched and took photos.

The teen's unusual fun was covered by Sports Illustrated, Yahoo and many other media outlets.

On Wednesday, Garth C. Mason Photography who took a number of photos of the teens wrote on Facebook the teens wore $4.99 painter suits and not medical grade hazmat suits.
