Things Don’t Get Much More “Careless and Reckless” Than This

A Port Jervis man stood in Orange County Court yesterday and was found guilty of tampering with physical evidence and reckless endangerment. What could he have done to face such heavy charges?

The answer is, he blew a hole through his ceiling with a pump-action shotgun. That is far from the end of the craziness though.

Kevin Jeanty, not only did he blow a hole through his own ceiling, but the slug he fired pierced through the floors and ceilings of two other apartment owners above him. The slug itself eventually stopped, but it's where it stopped that's truly frightening.

striking a toy box and coming to rest about a foot from where a child was sleeping.

 

Even More Danger

As if putting multiple people's lives in danger because one was so blatantly careless wasn't enough, Jeanty made the situation even worse for himself. When Port Jervis police arrived on the scene, Jeanty was waiting outside wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a flare gun. That still wasn't enough though as officers discovered Jeanty tried to hide the gun after disassembling it. Luckily his plan of "hide the gun in the blanket" was just as dumb as his actions.

What are the Charges and Why?

There's really no way I can put this to make it sound less crazy than this whole story already does, so the plain answer is that based on the report, Jeanty blew a hole through his roof and put people in danger after he had an argument with his wife.

The End Result

A the end of the day a story like this makes me think of plenty of things. I can think of numerous 2nd amendment issues I've read about in the past and how guns are a polarizing topic that just like everything else makes people draw a metaphorical line in the sand. However, what I think I'll do in this situation is just be thankful that no one actually was hurt from this event.  District Attorney David Hoovler summed it up best by saying “It is remarkably fortunate that no one was seriously injured or killed.” Agreed Mr. Hoovler, most thoroughly agreed.
