According to police, a New York man obtained tens of thousands of dollars in benefits he was not entitled to.

Peter J. McArdle, 54 of Hudson, NY was arrested and charged with Welfare Fraud third-degree, and six counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing, both felonies.

The Sheriff's Office along with the Welfare Fraud Task Force launched a joint investigation in September of 2015.

The investigation revealed that McArdle allegedly collected public assistance benefits after submitting false paperwork on six separate dates to the Columbia County Department of Social Services and obtained benefits totaling $41,091.83, which he was not entitled too.

McArdle was arraigned  and released on his recognizance. He is due back in court at a later date.
