When I was a kid my family didn't do a lot of eating out. Occasionally there was a trip to McDonalds or a place called Carrols that doesn't exist any longer. It seems like the only time we ate out was when we we on the road.

Growing up an Army brat there was always the annual move that resulted in a road trip to the next Army base. Along the way, we stayed in the Holiday Inn and ate a lot of road food. That was where I was introduced to my first A&W Root Beer.

A&W Restaurants are Back with Frosty Root Beer

Each year we would venture to New England on vacation and I could count on stopping at a Howard Johnson which was famous for its clam strips but once I had been to an A&W there was no going back for me. A Coney Dog and a frosty Root Beer were my favorite part of the trip.

I had forgotten all about A&W restaurants until I saw a Facebook post today where they were promoting a Root Beer in a frosty mug up against the latest travel mug trend. Seeing that Root Beer brought back a flavor memory I can't get out of my mind.

I started thinking I needed an A&W Root Beer in a frosty mug. The funny thing is I barely drink soda anymore, but I am now obsessed with getting an A&W Root Beer. I was thinking I wonder if I can find it in the soda aisle at the grocery, and then I thought, wait maybe I can go to an actual A&W restaurant.

Where are The A&W Restaurants in New York

Imagine my surprise when I found out we have an A&W in the Hudson Valley. We have 7 in New York. I had no idea. The closest one for me is the 59 West Merritt Blvd location in Fishkill. I don't get down to that part of Route 9 that often so I had no idea they had put in an A&W.

If you were a child of the 70s you remember going to an A&W. The restaurants were everywhere with its freshly made Root Beer. It is great that tradition has been around since 1919.

It is deliciously awesome that it has returned to the Hudson Valley bringing with it the Original Bacon Cheeseburger perfect by A&W in 1963, Hand-breaded Chicken Tenders, Coney Dogs, Fries, Cheese Curds, and don't forget the Root Beer Floats. A&W Restaurants are also credited with popularizing the Onion Ring in fast food restaurants during the 1960s.

All I can say is that it is the finest Root Beer you will find and the food is good too.
