Fatal Deer vs Motorcycle Accident in Schoharie County

On Tuesday September 1st, 2026, the Schoharie County Sheriff's Office posted a press release regarding a fatal accident at State Route 145 in the Town of Broome.

The accident happened at approximately 7:25 am. According to the report, the prliminary investigation determined that a  "motorcycle was traveling southbound on State Route 145 when it struck a deer that had entered the roadway."

In the statement the Schoharie County Sheriff's Office explains that the collision caused "the operator of the Indian motorcycle to be thrown from the vehicle."

They write:

The operator, identified as Brian W. Cross, 57, of Middleburgh, New York, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision. Mr. Cross was pronounced deceased at the scene.

As of September 1st, this is an ongoing investigation and no further details were released.

Community Mourns Motorcyclist After Fatal Accident

After the Schoharie County Sheriff's Office posted their statement regarding the fatal accident, comments from the community started to pour in.

One comment said "I heard the call come in this morning. My condolences to his family and those who knew and loved him."

In on of the comments we hear from Brian Cross' wife. Sandi Cross wrote in the comment section:

Thank you all. My husband died doing what he loved which was riding his Indian. I hope now he is finally pain free.

Sandi Cross is one of the owners of 2 Twisted Ladies ice cream shop in Cairo. On Facebook 2 Twisted Sister shared the news adding that they are closed this week as they grieve and process the loss.

Cross writes "I need to be able to grieve and process the loss of my husband Brian and need one less thing to worry about during that time" adding:

Hard to be happy in the happiest place in town when you are so utterly sad.

2 Twisted Ladies will open on Tuesday September 8th and Wednesday September 9th from 1 pm until 8pm to sell the rest of their stock for the season.

The statement goes on to say:

 I truly hope the 2 twisted ladies community understands and continues to support us next year.

Deer Vs. Motor Vehicle Accidents in New York State

According to the New York State Department of Transportation there are over 65,000 deer-vehicle collisions every year across the state.

The DOT reports that most of these accidents occurred between October and December "during the animals' peak breeding times when they are far less cautious."

Additionally, the DOT explains that the greatest risks for deer-vehicle collisions are 2 hours before sunrise and 2 hours after sunset each day.
